Hyperliquid Plans Permissionless HIP-4 Outcome Markets With…

Hyperliquid plans to extend its HIP-4 outcome-market framework to permissionless deployment, allowing builders that stake 500,000 HYPE to launch event-based contracts on the network in a future upgrade.

The proposed structure would reuse the economic security model already applied to HIP-3 builder-deployed perpetual exchanges. At HYPE’s current price of roughly $63.35, the required stake represents about $31.7 million, making deployment permissionless in a technical sense but financially accessible mainly to well-capitalized teams, protocols and market operators.

HIP-4 outcome markets are expected to launch first on testnet. Hyperliquid’s current fee documentation continues to classify outcome tokens as testnet-only, indicating that the permissionless mainnet model remains planned rather than fully operational.

Outcome Contracts Expand Hyperliquid’s Product Scope

HIP-4 introduces fully collateralized contracts tied to defined events or settlement conditions. Unlike perpetual futures, these instruments do not depend on continuous funding payments or leveraged positions that can be liquidated. Prices can represent the market’s assessment of an outcome, while contracts settle according to predetermined rules.

That design could support conventional prediction markets as well as options-like products with fixed expirations, bounded payouts and non-linear returns. It also broadens Hyperliquid beyond its core perpetual-futures business and places the protocol in closer competition with specialist event-contract venues such as Polymarket and Kalshi.

The deployment model is designed to give builders control over market definitions and settlement while retaining protocol-level safeguards. Standardized contract templates would require validator approval, reducing the risk that ambiguous wording or inconsistent settlement logic becomes embedded in widely traded markets.

Deployers could receive as much as 50% of trading fees generated by their markets, creating an incentive to develop products, attract liquidity and maintain reliable operations. Hyperliquid’s HIP-3 framework similarly allows deployers to share in fees, while the protocol’s broader fee system directs community revenue toward liquidity providers, deployers and the assistance fund.

High Stake Creates Security and Concentration Trade-Off

The 500,000 HYPE requirement serves as both an anti-spam mechanism and a financial bond. Deployers may face slashing if markets contain unclear definitions, are operated improperly or settle incorrectly. Hyperliquid’s HIP-3 rules already permit validators to slash staked HYPE through a stake-weighted vote when deployer actions threaten protocol correctness, uptime or performance.

The size of the bond could strengthen confidence in settlement integrity, but it also raises barriers to entry. At current prices, the stake is significantly larger in dollar terms than when the same 500,000-HYPE threshold was introduced for HIP-3. That may concentrate deployments among established firms or encourage smaller builders to partner with capital providers.

For HYPE, the upgrade would add another source of structural token demand because deployers must lock substantial balances to operate markets. However, the economic effect will depend on how many builders participate, whether staked tokens remain locked for extended periods and whether HIP-4 generates meaningful trading volume.

The larger strategic implication is that Hyperliquid is attempting to turn its onchain order-book infrastructure into a general deployment layer for financial markets. Success will depend less on the availability of contracts than on liquidity, clear resolution standards, trusted data sources and the ability to manage disputes without compromising the protocol’s neutral settlement framework.
